Small-cap Stock Tracking for an Equity Research Department

An analyst at an equity research department of a major investment bank sought to create a proprietary database to track macro trends for small-cap financial institutions. The product would serve as a key differentiator against other sell-side competition. The analyst wanted to create a database that could capture over 50 financial metrics on a quarterly basis over the past two years for 100+ financial institutions, plus, have the flexibility to be updated on an ongoing basis. It was an extremely large project that not only needed a significant number of resources skilled in financial analysis, but also resources with programming expertise that could design a logical, and easily navigable database. Our client had previously attempted to build the database internally, but had neither the scale, nor technical know-how on his team to be successful. As a result, on his subsequent attempt, he turned to Copal Partners for help.

At Copal, we were able to immediately provide the scale necessary through leveraging our talented pool of CAs and MBAs. We set up a team of eight analysts to capture and analyze financial data for each of the 100+ companies. In addition, we had three programmers working in parallel to create an intuitive, Excel-based user interface for the database that could give the client complex analysis in easy-to-read graphs and reports. Our solution also allowed the analyst to review the source documents with a single mouse click, providing easy auditability and confidence in the integrity of the analysis. We quickly and accurately captured a significant amount of financial data, and turned the data into intelligent analysis that produced compelling insights. A seemingly impossible project for the Analyst to complete within his own team became a reality with the help of Copal Partners.
