Comparable Company Analysis Database for an Investment Bank

An industry group in a leading investment bank was using over twenty different templates to perform comparable company analysis. The group, spread over three cities in two countries, was routinely duplicating efforts; moreover, pitch books across the group lacked standardization due to differing methodologies. Copal Partners was initially engaged to alleviate the problem of maintaining 20+ templates. However, our key contribution was developing a way to rationalize the 20+ templates into 4, providing each sub-sector with one template. Copal not only designed and implemented a method to standardize the comps, but also assumed responsibility for all of the comparable company analysis performed by the group.

To eliminate superfluous templates, Copal analyzed each one to understand the key differences  and then helped to consolidate all the comps into four master templates. This was done in just over a month. The four master templates, while providing consistency across the group, also maintained flexibility; bankers did not lose any of the functionality that they were accustomed to through the 20 previous templates. Subsequently, the client hired Copal to serve all of its comps needs, including management of a database of 200+ companies and delivery of regular and on-demand comps analysis. As in all Copal products, data integrity was vital, and as such, we designed processes that provided easy auditability and maximum transparency. For example, we provided features such as comments boxes in Excel cells which provided our client with detailed source information for each number in the comp-set.

A seemingly unmanageable universe of 200 comps in 20 different templates was quickly transformed into a powerful and integrated solution through Copal Partners' expertise.
